Amazing. Set in late 1700 on the island of Haiti when slavery was becoming abolished.

I LOVE this book about a young woman from Chile who runs away to California during the gold rush. Beautifully written by Isabelle Allende. I just love female heroines!

Aurora del Valle suffers a brutal trauma that shapes her character and erases from her mind all recollection of the first five years of her life. Raised by her ambitious grandmother, the regal and commanding Paulina del Valle, Aurora grows up in a privileged environment, free of the limitations that circumscribe the lives of women at that time but tormented by horrible nightmares. When forced to recognize her betrayal at the hands of the man she loves, decides to explore the mystery of her past.

Purchasing this book brought me together with Isabel-my April was heading off to Chile and I needed to talk with THE expert-Isabel!

"Eva Luna" by Isabel Allende Great book...House of Spirits is a little better in my opinion

The "princess and the pauper" story loosely based on Chilean history during the Pinochet dictatorship, journalism and politics. Fantastic writing. Isabel Allende rocks!

Eva Luna, Penguin Essential series. Artwork by Elsa Mora

If NYT calls this "spectacular", then I call it "mesmirizing". Still one of the most beautifully books ever written...

Isabel Allende is a great author!
