Monday, January 17, 2011 Got Vinegar? Helpful Hints For Winter *Ice-proof your windows...with vinegar! Frost on it's way? Just fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water & spritz it on all your windows at night. In the morning, they'll be clear of icy mess. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which raises the melting point of water---preventing water from freezing! * *Squeak-proof your wipers...with rubbing alcohol! Wipe the wipers with a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol or ammonia. This one trick can make badly streaking & squeaking wipers change to near perfect silence & clarity. * *Prevent car doors from freezing shut...with cooking spray! Spritz cooking oil on the rubber seals around car doors & rub it in with a paper towel. The cooking spray prevents water from melting into the rubber!* *De-ice your lock in seconds...with hand sanitizer! Just put some hand sanitizer gel on the key & the lock & the problems solved! * *Fog-proof your windshield...with shaving cream! Spray some shaving cream on the inside of your windshield & wipe if off with paper towels. Shaving cream has many of the same ingredients found in commercial defoggers! * *Keep your headlights clear...with car wax! Just wipe ordinary car wax on your headlights. It contains special water repellents that will prevent that messy mixture from accumulating on your lights - lasts 6 weeks. * Posted by Homemade Mamas at 12:00 AM 12 comments Labels: Cleaning Products, home

VINEGAR TO CLEAN YOUR HOUSE 5% solution of vinegar that is commonly sold in every supermarket kills 99% of bacteria, 82% of mold, and 80% of germs (viruses). Why did I not know this sooner?! Probably because vinegar is sold primarily for food preparation and vinegar companies do not advertise the other uses. With the help of the internet, I found recipes for cleaning the whole apartment. For some areas, particularly in the bathroom, I added baking soda to the mix. Here are my vinegar cleaning recipes.Equal parts distilled white vinegar and water (in a spray bottle, labeled) : use on kitchen counters, sink, windows, walls, mirrors, small appliances, ceramic tile.Vinegar (not diluted) : for tougher grease build up on stove top, toilet1 cup vinegar and 2 tablespoons baking soda: to unclog drains. Pour baking soda first, then vinegar, let sit for 30 minutes, then flush with cold water.Baking soda sprinkled on a sponge: for more abrasive cleaning in bathtub. Scrub, then let it sit for 5 minutes and wipe clean. I feel good about this switch for a few reasons. First, the odor of vinegar diminishes much faster than bleach. Second, vinegar is a completely biodegradable product so it is safe for the environment. Third, vinegar is way cheaper than all the bottles of cleaning supplies under my kitchen sink. Also, I am buying less of the non recyclable plastic spray nozzles. So I found another way to save the planet and money at the same time. Yay!
