During this era of Revolution, which includes the French Revolution following soon after the American Revolution, one of the most important motivating concepts was that of Liberty. Liberty was not to be confused with Democracy but instead meant something more akin to the rule of law versus the rule of haphazard tyranny. So true, keep church and state separate, it in no way effects the sanctity of marriage it doesn't make anything right or wrong, it just allows people who already in everyway act like there married to just have a shared bank account and addopt children no one else will.
