Richard Branson - 'A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts.' 'Above all, you want to create something you're proud of. This has always been my philosophy of business. I can honestly say that I have never gone into any business purely to make money. If that is the sole motive, then I believe you are better off not doing it.'

Iron Lady, Interesting People, Baroness Margaret, Actions Watch, Female Prime, Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister
Britain's first woman prime minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher 'The Iron Lady' from 1979-1990. Born 1925 died 2013.
Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) otherwise known as the “Iron Lady”, graduated from Oxford University and became Britain's first and only female prime minister. Margaret Thatcher is proof that being a leader is not only a man’s job. It can motivate women around the world to stand up for themselves in any situations.
"Watch your thoughts for they become words. Watch your words for they become actions. Watch your actions for they become...habits. Watch your habits, for they become your character. And watch your character, for it becomes your destiny! What we think we become." Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Thatcher is probably one of the most influential leaders in Britain’s political history, and it's first female Prime Minister. The Iron Lady, as she is famously known, wasn't always popular. She had many successes and failures during her term (1979 -1990), for which she was both lauded and criticized.
Margaret Thatcher - "The Iron Lady" - Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a towering figure in post-war British and world politics, and the first woman to become British prime minister, died at the age of 87 ... (1925-2013)
Margaret Thatcher, the IronLady. She was the first and only female Prime Minister of England. She held the post longer than any one else has.
R.I.P Margaret Thatcher the Thatcher years ... Margaret Hilda Thatcher (nee Roberts) ( 13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013) was Britain’s first female prime minister, and the only prime minister to be re-elected for three consecutive terms in the 20th century, from 1979 to 1990.
Margaret Thatcher (1925 – 2013), was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century. A Soviet journalist called her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style.
A huge thank you to Rachel Cotterill, who answered my call to write a guest post about the women who inspire. Rachel chose to write about living in England under Margaret Thatcher as PM and I seriously love this post. Imagine inspiring a nation of girls that they CAN do anything? I can't thank you enough, Rachel, for this lovely guest post! I can recall very clearly the first glimpse I had, as a child, into the workings of politics. I was seven years old and we were doing art at school. I don't remember what I painted, but I do remember reading the pages of newspaper that were spread out to protect the tables. Margaret Thatcher had stepped down, and the race was on to find a replacement. Profiles of the would-be leaders filled the columns. I was fairly oblivious to parties and policies, but this was news worth noting: all the candidates were male. For the first time in my young life, it was about to happen that a man was running the country. Almost everyone in the UK has strong opinions (whether good or bad) about Thatcher and the changes she brought about. For me, having a woman in Number 10 was the key point; her politics were secondary. I grew up believing that anything was possible. For all the stories I'd heard of sexism and discrimination, I knew that I could run the country if I wanted to: look, there was another woman doing it right now. I really believed the glass ceiling had been smashed. And it wasn't just that she was the Prime Minister. Along the way, she'd taken on a number of traditionally male careers, graduating in chemistry and then training as a barrister. As I dreamed of being a theoretical physicist or a high court judge (okay, maybe I was a strange child!), that knowledge always hovered in the back of my mind. There aren't that many strong female role models in the sciences, and certainly very few who are visible in the media where scientifically-inclined girls can stumble upon them. In the end I took a different path (via classics and linguistics into computer science), and I don't think I'll ever be Prime Minister, but it's nice to know that I could. I can't help wondering about the role models we're giving today's young girls, when even broadsheet papers insist on commenting on the Home Secretary's choice of shoes. Because whatever you thought of Thatcher, at least she's remembered for her policies, not her fashion sense.

Hudson River landing
I've been thinking a lot about Sully Sullenberger lately. Cause for concern? Not hardly. The guy has such a punchy name I just can't get him out my head. But you have to wonder, would this man still be making headlines (or randomly showing up in my dreams) if he didn't have such a memorable moniker? Brief history lesson (not that you need one): Sully Sullenberger is the dude who safely landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson river after a flock of birds disabled both engines. His crazy mad flying skills saved the lives of 155 passengers. Yeah, it would have been an impressive feat even if his name wasn't Sully Sullenberger. But let's be real. There's no way we'd still be talking about this guy if his name was, say, Ted Reynolds. In fact, we would've forgotten all about him within 30 minutes of his heroic touchdown. Seriously, that's a fact. All I'm saying is, if you're considering having kids, please give the child a super catchy name. You'll increase your chances of someday meeting Oprah tenfold. And now I'd like to leave you with some of my favorite images of Sully Sullenberger enjoying his much-deserved hero status. Hangin' with Oprah! Gracing the cover of People! Dubbed "The Last Aviator"! Tossing out the first pitch at a Yankees game! Peddling his own book! Always keeping a fresh-faced philly on each arm!

American Experience presents the first in-depth assessment of the forty-first president of the United States, drawing upon new scholarship and unparalleled access to figures in Bush's private and public life. George H.W. Bush, from Emmy Award-winning producer Austin Hoyt (Reagan, Eisenhower, Victory in the Pacific), reveals Bush as a pivotal player during a critical moment in American and world history and in a powerful political dynasty. Bush's personal letters, and interviews with his closest advisors and prominent critics inform the film, which features interviews with First Lady Barbara Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Mikhail Gorbachev, and more.
The complete program transcript for the George H.W. Bush biography documentaryfrom AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. GEORGE H. W. BUSH Part I: CAVU Narrator: September 2, 1944, was what Navy pilots called CAVU -- ceiling and visibility unlimited. It would be Ensign George H. W. Bush's 50th mission in his three-man Avenger bomber. He was commissioned in 1943 at age 19, the youngest pilot in the U.S. Navy. Bush had seen action in June over the Mariana Islands in one of the biggest air battles of the Pacific War. The target September 2 was a Japanese radio tower on the tiny island of Chichi Jima. Bush dove into black puffs of anti-aircraft fire. "Suddenly, I felt the plane jolt," he remembered, "and the smoke started pouring in." He finished his bombing run, banked out to sea so the crew could get out, and then bailed out himself. George H. W. Bush: Looked up and the parachute had been ripped up. Landed in the water. Swam over, got into my little life raft. Narrator: The submarine U.S.S. Finback, on patrol for downed pilots, rescued him. George H. W. Bush: I remember seeing that submarine surface. And I remember pulling along side and I remember a bunch of bearded guys standing there. Narrator: For the next month, George Bush joined the Finback's crew. Aboard he agonized about the fate of his gunner Ted White and radioman John Delaney. One went down with the plane. The other's chute never opened. "It still plagues me if I gave those guys enough time to get out," the former flyboy said with quiet emotion almost 60 years later. "I think about those guys all the time." Timothy Naftali, biographer: He was an emotive, an emotional leader, much more emotional than people thought. He cried quite readily. One thing that made George Bush a less appealing candidate was that he refused to show his emotions. That's not what a man did -- a man of his generation and of his upbringing. And so the public saw a slightly awkward man who didn't seem quite ready to share his true self with them. When you got to know him, the human side, the emotional side was there. It came out.
