Furosemide aka Lasix most commonly used diuretic. Used to reduce body water content (usually by inducing urination) for 2 conditions: hypertension or edema. It's the #1 treatment for edema assoc c CHF (aka left-sided) also used for pts c cirrhosis or renal impairment. A loop-diuretic, it acts on the Loop of Henle in the kidney. As it's NOT a potassium-sparing diuretic, most common adverse effect is electrolyte imbalance. Monitor lab and I/O. Lasix "lasts 6 hours" referring to duration of drug.
