One major purpose of Andean markets is for people who live at the high altitudes--eg 12,000 above sea level can come to market to trade their potatoes, which can be grown high up, for lower products like vegetables, fruit, corn.

Sometimes it isn't the stairs themselves as much as their location that makes them so beautiful.
