Remember the girl on the national geographic? As per Steve McCurry; the photographer who captured Sharbat Gula on camera: Whether Sharbat Gula is still alive is yet again a mystery, but what remains is her haunting gaze; a before (1984) and an after (2002)<--last seen. Her suffering visualized through her deteriorating youth with her eyes speaking volumes of the terror and violence she has seen and lived. What do you see? I see HURT when I look at this picture, lips turned downward; sad.
Afghan girl with the incredible eyes.. national geographic... remember this??
Afghan Girl by Steve McCurry for National Geographic. "Her eyes have captivated the world since she appeared on our cover in 1985. She remembers the moment. The photographer took her picture. She had never been photographed before. Until they met again 17 years later, she had not been photographed since. "
Afghan Girl Photography by Steve McCurry 1985 National Geographic.
I was so struck with her picture as a girl that I have kept that National Geographic all these years.
It doesn't look like the same person. The shape of the face is completely different, the shape of the nose different. The eyes are similar but even they do not appear to be the eyes of the same person, since even the color is different. I guess it's possible, but I have never seen time or hardship change even the structure of a person's face.
