    17th century stumpwork picture depicting Faith, Hope & Charity with a central scene of a lady & 3 kids with a castle & dog another lady to the left holding a book on which 'Faith' is written, to the right is a lady standing with her arm out stretched with anchor and snake at her side; deer & lion seated to the bottom of the picture, with fishpond, fountain, butterflies, insects & others, flower heads & foliage, possible that pieces have been cut & replaced to a silk background of a later date.

    A rare Lord Chancellor's stumpwork burse (purse) used to carry the Great Seal. Sumptuously worked in silver and gilt thread on a red velvet background, the design has changed very little since Elizabethan times and incorporates the Royal Crest of Queen Victoria with the harp prominent which suggests that it may have been made for a Lord Chancellor of Ireland. Wonderful condition apart from some fading to the velvet and still retains its ties and internal stiffening boards. 18.5 inches wide x 24

    This is a sample of Stumpwork or dimensional embroidery. The cardinal is padded and then stitched using long and short stitch. The leaves are stitched using ribbon embroidery and all of it is stitched on a small piece of silk.

    whipped spiderweb The cool thing about this flower is that each spoke is not just a straight stitch, it is a long and skinny chain stitch. Once the whipping is done, the sides of each chain are pulled together to form the diamonds at the top. This is from Jane Nicholas' book Stumpwork Embroidery.

    This would have to be the cutest embroidery I have ever seen! I haven't tried stumpwork myself, but I am so tempted to after finding this. Just divine!
