The Street by Ann Petry. Originally published in 1946 and hailed by critics as a masterwork. The Street was the first novel written by a black female??author??to sell over 1,000,000 copies. There was talk that Lena Horne would star in a film version, but it never happened.
The Street by Ann Petry. Originally published in 1946 and hailed by critics as a masterwork. The Street was the first novel written by a black female author to sell over 1,000,000 copies.
This 1946 novel inspired my thinking about how to translate the desperation of people pushing against the conventions of their time. Petry's voice is unsparing in her story of a woman in 1940s Harlem facing the confines of caste, class, race, and gender as she tries to make a way for herself and her son in a world in which the street is a menacing, breathing thing. The book rings as true today as when it was written.

#5 - Combining cutting-edge neurological research with the age-old mystery of how and when inspiration strikes, Jonah Lehrer’s "Imagine: How Creativity Works" is a fun, engaging study of creativity. Lehrer uses case studies like 3M’s and Pixar’s innovative corporate cultures and Bob Dylan’s songwriting habits to frame scientific findings about the brain and where creativity comes from.

Wrote an extensive piece on this book when I was still primarily a literary scholar. It was collected in "At Millennium's End" (2000, SUNY Press, ed. Kevin Boon). The piece focuses on the literary and artistic allusions in the novel, how those allusions relate to the narrative, and, ultimately, their feminist slant.

My favorite RIchard Jury book yet ... The Old Silent. Feeling burned out, Jury takes an unplanned stopover in Yorkshire and books a room at a cozy inn called the Old Silent. Violence finds him anyway when he becomes the only witness to a murder. Though Nell Healey shot her husband in cold blood, Jury will go to any lengths to help her, including taking sick leave from Scotland Yard to investigate.
The Old Silent by Martha Grimes. Another brilliant, haunting, funny, sad Richard Jury mystery. This one contains one of my favorite characters in all literature to date, a child known as the Fury.
She is one of the queens of the english detective novels. All her books are named after actual English pubs. I've read all the "Richard Jury" novels to date. Can't wait for the next one!
Another good series featuring Richard Jury. The characters are superb. Her other books are different/interesting as well.
