The original Penn Station in New York City, the most amazing Beaux-Arts building ever, designed by McKim, Mead and White and completed in 1910. Its demolition began in 1963. The Pennsylvania Plaza complex with the fourth Madison Square Garden was completed there in 1968.

Pennsylvania Station or Penn Station was originally called New York Terminal. It opened in 1910 and was considered a masterpiece of the Beaux-Arts style inspired by the grand train stations of Europe. This picture was taken only 2 years before the demolition in 1963, which was part of a plan for the new modern underground train station that currently handles over 500,000 passengers per day making Penn Station North America's busiest transportation hub. #TBT #NYC #BookLHC #PennStation
Former Penn Station: "Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves. Even when we had Penn Station, we couldn’t afford to keep it clean. We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed."

The former, glorious Pennsylvania Station. Torn down to make room for an ugly, "modern" Penn Station..
Penn Station Main Waiting Room patterned after Roman baths with Grand Arches, Marble Corinthian Columns and high pitched ceilings. http://www.powwmedia.com/pennsy/images/mainwait.jpg
The main waiting room, inspired by the Roman Baths of Caracalla, was the largest indoor space in the city — a block and a half long with vaulted glass windows soaring 150 feet over a sun-drenched chamber. Beyond that, trains emerged from bedrock to deposit passengers on a concourse lit by an arching glass and steel greenhouse roof.
Penn Station, NYC: Modeled after the Roman Baths of Caracalla and comparable in size to the nave of St.-Peters in the Vatican, this elegant room was made of travertine marble, a honey-colored stone imported from Tivoli, Italy, that grew lustrous with the human touch. Standing on its pink marble floors, one looked up 150 feet to a coffered, vaulted ceiling.
