This is the Temple of Jupiter in Pompeii, Italy. This is a town that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD. Almost 2000 years ago, nearly this whole city was mowed down by lava or pelted by volcanic matter coming back down to the ground after the cataclysmic explosions. This city was buried under 20+ ft of debris. It was accidentally discovered by a farmer who was digging for a well. Today the city is 2/3 unearthed.
