Little Free Library is a nonprofit movement that offers free books housed in small containers to members of the local community. It was founded in Hudson, Wisconsin by Todd Bol as a tribute to his mother who was a book lover and school teacher. He mounted a wooden container designed to look like a school house on a post on his lawn. Library owners can create their own library box, usually about the size of a doll house, or purchase one from the website. Libraries may be registered and assigned a number at the organization's website, and can be found through their GPS coordinates. Owners receive a sign that reads "Little Free Library". They often have the phrase, "Take a Book. Leave a Book." As of March 2012, there are over 200 Little Free Libraries in 34 states and 17 countries.

Andrew Carnegie built 2,509 libraries around the turn of the 20th century. Now Rick Brooks and Todd Bol are on a mission to top his total with their 2x2 Little Free Libraries. The little boxes are designed to hold about 20 books to borrow and enjoy. Each Little Free Library runs on the honor system, displaying a sign that asks patrons to "Take a Book, Leave a Book." ... probably the most amazing thing.

THE LITTLE LIBRARY THAT COULD... Little Free Library in Madison Wisconsin. On Felton Place, a residential street in Madison, Wisconsin there is a very small library holding about 20 books. Not much bigger than a bird house, the little library is of rustic construction. A door adds to the charm and to the notion that the books are to be valued and protected. It’s based on the pay it forward principle. Take a book, leave a book.

Little Free Library. I love this idea and want one out in front of our house.
