"The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins /// Surprisingly well-written. The storyline is interesting and the characters aren't whiny and annoying. I read the trilogy really quickly, as I felt really involved with the story. The movie that's coming out in the spring should be pretty neat.
"Guns, Germs, and Steel" - a great book about how civilization developed, and how location dictated what societies developed (in terms of domesticated animals, plants, and social structures as well). It is a sometimes dense book, but handles world history/culture well - it's a great foundation for learning and understanding world history.
