Katsura "Cotton Candy" tree, also a weeping variety. Gorgeous fall color.

  • Our Fairfield Home & Garden

Katsura Tree is an unusual but easily grown tree, Cercidiphyllum japonicum is known for its heart-shaped leaves which turn shades of bright yellow, pink, purple and red in autumn. In spring, its heart-shaped leaves emerge reddish-purple, changing to blue-green as they mature. Fast-growing to 40-60' tall and 30-40' wide, but it is very sensitive to drought and needs deep, permanently moist soil. Unique scented leaves in the autumn said to smell like burnt brown sugar or cotton candy.

I want a Katsura Tree: Also known as The Caramel Tree. Fragrant in the fall. (I think the leaves smell more like toasted marshmallows!)

some think the Katsura tree smells like caramel or cotton candy when it loses it's leaves in the fall. Besides being wonderful to smell in the fall, the Katsura sports a lovely blend of orange-, raspberry- and apricot-coloured leaves. In the spring Katsura has reddish-purple new growth, in summer it sports heart-shaped blue-green leaves and in winter the gray, slightly exfoliating bark lends interest.

Ginko. This is the ginko tree leaf it is also the symbol for Banks in Japan, the ginko fruit when left to rot smells quite horrid. My high school had these trees and the fall was an extremely smelly season for us students.
