In his time, Ernest Hemingway wrote impeccable prose. Obviously he had impeccable taste in books too. In 1934, he scribbled a reading list and passed it to an aspiring young writer after he learnt that the latter had not read Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace (‘That’s a damned good book. You ought to read it. […]

Orwell traces how the painful experiences of his childhood steered him towards writing and lays out what he believes to be the four universal motives for writing, most of which resonate with just about any domain of creative work. E.B. White: The writer’s role is what it has always been: he is a custodian, a secretary. Science and technology have perhaps deepened his responsibility but not changed it. In ‘The Ring of Time,’ I wrote: ‘As a writing man, or secretary, I have always felt charged with the safekeeping of all unexpected items of worldly or unworldly enchantment, as though I might be held personally responsible if even a small one were to be lost. But it is not easy to communicate anything of this nature. click

"Today marks the 113th birthday of E. B. White — timeless champion of literary style, crusader for the writer’s social responsibility, vocal pundit on matters of the free press, unsuspected New Yorker cover artist, and one of my two favorite authors of all time." - Brain Pickings
Elwyn Brooks White (1899 – 1985)usually known as E. B. White, was an American writer. He was a contributor to The New Yorker magazine and a co-author of the English language style guide, The Elements of Style, which is commonly known as "Strunk & White." He also wrote books for children, including Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little.
"Being the owner of Dachshunds, to me a book on dog discipline becomes a volume of inspired humor. Every sentence is a riot. Some day, if I ever get a chance, I shall write a book, or warning, on the character and temperament of the Dachshund and why he cant be trained and shouldnt be. I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a Dachshund to heed my slightest command." ~E.B. White Soo true

The last Beatles photoshoot: In August of 1969, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison joined John Lennon at his newly purchased 72-acre estate with Yoko Ono in Sunninghill, Berkshire. They were photographed by Ethan Russell and Monte Fresco in the run up to the release of the last two albums the group would ever release, Abbey Road (September 1969) and Let it Be (May 1970).

By the spring of 1970, there was little more than a tangled set of business relationships keeping the Beatles together. Each of the Beatles was pursuing his musical interests outside of the band, and there were no plans in place to record together as a group. On April 10, 1970, an ambiguous Paul McCartney "self-interview" prior to the release of his solo album McCartney, was seized upon by the international media as an official announcement of a Beatles breakup.
