#Duke aka #JohnWayne on the set of Raoul Walsh's The Big Trail [Walsh named him "John Wayne"], a film which should have made him a star but bombed at the box office when released in Nov. 1930; it would take another 10 years before #Stagecoach...Duke was about 22 years old here & quite handsome; #western; courtesy of 20th Century Fox

9/06/14 12:38a John Wayne These photos, found by Retronaut, are from IMDB's page on a movie called ''The Big Trail''. Filmed in 1930, it was John Wayne's first headlining role. He played a fur trapper bent on revenge for the murder of his partner and falls in love with a young Ruth (Marguerite Churchill) along the route to Oregon to catch the killers.

wow, look how young! JOHN WAYNE IN “THE BIG TRAIL”, 1930- I saw it once. The original copy was so old, that when they converted it to VHS, some of the dialog and frames were missing and had to be subtitled in. It wasn't bad for being one of the first Talkies.

In 1958 newspapers complied a list of the 12 most powerful actors in Hollywood. They were named, the “Golden Dozen”. From L-R: Marlon Brando, Gary Cooper, Tony Curtis, Kirk Douglas, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, William Holden, Burt Lancaster, Gregory Peck, Frank Sinatra, James Stewart, John Wayne. For me, I think of few of these could go - Brando, Cooper, Curtis, Douglas, Lancaster and Wayne.
