"Charlotte Cushman was America's greatest 19th century tragic and dramatic actress during the eras of Edwin Forrest and Edwin Booth. She performed in England many times, and she had fond friendships with a number of women, one of the few semi-openly lesbian performers of her time. A rare original photograph circa 1870." "Vivian Maier, whose 1950s street photography is finally receiving the credit it is due. She was a Socialist, a Feminist, a movie critic, and a tell-it-like-it-is type of person....She wore a men's jacket, men's shoes and a large hat most of the time." Gloria Brame

Walter Naegle, Bayard Rustin’s partner until death, wrote, “A master strategist and tireless activist, Bayard Rustin is best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the U.S. He brought Gandhi’s protest techniques to the American civil rights movement and helped mold Martin Luther King, Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence. Despite these achievements, Rustin was silenced, threatened, arrested, beaten,...

Truth Quote: "To be afraid is to behave as if the truth were not true. " Bayard Rustin:
Ntr AmlonRa: Black History Month 101: Bayard Rustin, A Forgotten Civil Rights Leader One of the most influential moments in Black history is most certainly Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech at the March on Washington in 1963, but few Americans know that the March on Washington was organized by Bayard Rustin.
The forgotten civil rights activist and driving force behind the 1963 March on Washington will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. "Bayard was a political genius who, because of his sexual orientation, was forced to stay in the background of his greatest triumph," said Wade Henderson, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. "It is an extraordinary moment to see him recognized during this year of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington." #BlackHistory

Black History 2/1 ~ The same day congress approved the 13th Amendment ending slavery, Charles Sumner introduced a motion that made Boston attorney John Rock the first black attorney to be admitted to argue in the Supreme Court of the United States. John Rock was credited with honing the phrase “black is beautiful.” ~ Langston Hughes, author born 1906.
G.W. Carver was evidently uninterested in the role his image played in the racial politics of the time. His great desire in later life was simply to serve humanity; and his work, which began for the sake of the poorest of the black sharecroppers, paved the way for a better life for the entire South.
