Their fates were linked by the magical Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, nicknamed the “White City” for its majestic beauty. Architect Daniel Burnham built it; serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes used it to lure victims to his World’s Fair Hotel, designed for murder. Both men left behind them a powerful legacy, one of brilliance and energy, the other of sorrow and darkness.
I don't usually read books about murder and serial killers, but this one was good and I could not put the book down. Set during the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, which was nicknamed the “White City”, this book is a suspense story about a serial killer, Dr. H. H. Holmes, who used the "White City" to lure victims to his World’s Fair Hotel, designed for murder.

This book is constantly on my "Books to Read" list. I pinned this from my dear friend, Kat's board, who has it posted as one of her all time favorites... Now, I've definitely got to read it!
This is one of my all time favorite books. It's about the building of a cathedral in 12th century England and the people that are involved in the process. Really great historical fiction!
This is one of my all-time favorite books. I have not read/seen many novels that use the Middle Ages as a simple and straightforward backdrop to a beautiful story. The history of the time is painted expertly around the characters and emphasizes them without producing the stereotypical images of the time. Love it.
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett Historical fiction... no no! don't yawn. one of my very favorite books :)

I've read and loved The Kite Runner, so I think it's time to try A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author. Two more books to recommend for your reading list!
From the same author as The Kite Runner a Thousand splendid suns is based on some true fact but a fictional story. This was one of my favorite books.
1000 Splendid Suns reflects the violence and hope of Aghanistan from a woman’s point of view. The prose is poignantly and beautifully expressive, poetic in ways that touch the heart and the spirit. Khladed Hosseini, author of Kite Runner, captures war and personal conflict in ways that make history and news intimately personal. One of my favorites from Book Club
Khaled Hosseini outdid his amazing book The Kite Runner with this one. A great insight into a different culture that many of us are not familiar with. READ.
Second read by this author. The first was the Kite Runner (another great book). A Thousand Splendid Suns depicts the female role in Afghanistan..very frustrating to read at times, but the love story that is threaded throughout the is beautiful!!
A Thousand Splendid Suns- I would like to red this one. I read the Kite Runner and cried like a baby. I was crying so bad I had to leave the table during dinner and I'm sure this book is just as great.
Our next book club pick! 1000 Splendid Suns reflects the violence and hope of Aghanistan from a woman’s point of view. The prose is poignantly and beautifully expressive, poetic in ways that touch the heart and the spirit.
A Thousand Splendid Suns AND Kite Runner are amazing books!

The rare case of book and film both being extraordinary. Yes, it is one view of the antebellum South and Reconstruction and there are many viewpoints and stories from that time. Remember it was written when there were generations alive who survived that time.

Yamina's favorite books books-worth-reading
Gone with the Wind is a novel written by Margaret Mitchell, first published in 1936. The story is set in Clayton County, Georgia, and Atlanta during the American Civil War and Reconstruction era. It depicts the experiences of Scarlett O'Hara, the spoiled daughter of a well-to-do plantation owner, who must use every means at her disposal to come out of the poverty she finds herself in after Sherman's March to the Sea. A historical novel, the story is a Bildungsroman or coming-of-age story, with the title taken from a poem written by Ernest Dowson. Gone with the Wind was popular with American readers from the onset and was the top American fiction bestseller in the year it was published and in 1937. As of 2014, a Harris poll found it to be the second favorite book of American readers, just behind the Bible. More than 30 million copies have been printed worldwide. Written from the perspective of the slaveholder, Gone with the Wind is Southern plantation fiction. Its portrayal of slavery and African Americans is controversial, as well as its use of a racial epithet and ethnic slurs. However, the novel has become a reference point for subsequent writers about the South, both black and white. Scholars at American universities refer to it in their writings, interpret and study it. The novel has been absorbed into American popular culture. Margaret Mitchell was imaginative in the use of color symbolism, especially the colors red and green, which surround Scarlett O'Hara. Mitchell identified the primary theme as survival. She left the ending speculative for the reader, however. She was often asked what became of her lovers, Rhett and Scarlett. She did not know, and said, "For all I know, Rhett may have found someone else who was less difficult." Two sequels authorized by Mitchell's estate were published more than a half century later. A parody was also produced. Mitchell received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the book in 1937. It was adapted into a 1939 American film. The book is often read or misread through the film. Gone with the Wind is the only novel by Mitchell published during her lifetime
Disturbing, but couldn't put it down. Couldn't seem to get into the other books in this trilogy though.

i've made book store employees search for copies of books with the original covers on more than one occasion.... books with movie covers are my pet peeve.
Yup. I prefer the original cover, but if it's not available, I'll settle for the movie cover. (But I eventually get a copy with the original.)
I demanded (yes, demanded, ungrateful brat that I am) the *original* cover of Memoirs of a Geisha and NOT the movie cover.
Yesss... I specifically avoided a nice copy of The Help because it had the movie cover on it. I was rewarded for this deed by finding a hardback copy of it with the original cover. ^_^
