Crocheted rag rugs from fabric and a hook - I tried this once and it uses a LOT of fabric. My suggestion to keep the cost down is to use whatever scraps you have or cut up old clothes. You can find floor-length skirts at the thrift stores for next to nothing and they offer a lot of fabric.

joining rag rugs- I believe there should be a slit in the new end as well to pull the length through and make a knot. Some cut continuous lengths of fabric by turning corners before getting to the end of the fabric itself.
