    "We're bastards to the world and they're bastards to us," one Hells Angel told Newsweek in 1965. "When you walk into a place where people can see you, you want to look as repulsive and repugnant as possible. We are complete social outcasts -- outsiders against society."

    "Hambone" poses during the ride from Berdoo to Bakersfield. Ray and Bride spent more than a month with the Angels in the spring of '65, "mostly on weekends."

    "I remember seeing some of the women take a razor blade and trim their eyebrows, and a lot of them managed to achieve this very hard, distinctive look," Ray says. "It's a look that's difficult to recreate, I think, and one that, when you look at these pictures, is really of its time. This look says mid-1960s. That's what I see here, without a doubt." Hell's Angels.

    A biker named Roseberry sports a "one percenter" patch -- a badge of honor for the Angels and other motorcycle clubs whose members revel in and celebrate their outlaw status. 1965.
