Grandpa doesn't feel comfortable leaving the place he's grown up in and has to be almost unconscious to go. One of the reasons for Grandma and Grandpa's deaths could have been from the new environment and not being able to adapt to it (Steinbeck 111, 146).
I always say that if I lived in a cardboard box, it would be a nice cardboard box. I never understand when people don't make where they are living into a home. Just because you are renting doesn't mean that you can't/shouldn't put your stamp on it.
