Sounds good--another pinner wrote: Want a laugh-out-loud funny book to read at the beach? Or a great lighthearted father's day read? Bill Bryson's book about hiking the Appalachian Trail with his friend recalls his hilarious ordeal of walking the 800 km trail with a backpack full of too much Spam, and not enough real camping gear. Love this book!
Listen, you've seen my pins on "Glamping" so I'm not the typical hiker but everyone should read Bryson's book on hiking the Appalachian Trail. You'll laugh so hard you better read during the day so you don't wake anyone.

Hiking the Appalachian trail is on my bucket list (ok, ok, some of the Appalachian trail, not all of it). So I read this wonderful account by Des Moines native Bill Bryson. He has a wonderful, sometimes sarcastic, sense of humor and it is not only a "visual" walk of the trail, but also interweaves the interpersonal relationship of his long time friend who joined him. I've read several of Bryson's books, this is my favorite.

A Child Called It: One Child's Courage to Survive. By Dave Pelzer. First book in a 3 part series of a boy that survived nearly fatal child abuse. The second book is about his time in foster care, and the third is about becoming the adult he is today. Very sad and heart grabbing, but worth reading
A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer was probably the saddest book I have ever read. I cried so many times while reading this, and got hotflash angry just as much if not more.
MY favorite book of all time..This book is a true story about one of the worst child abuse cases in California's history. It came to an end on March 5, 1973 when Dave Pelzer entered foster care. Dave begins his incredible story as an abused child with his rescue in part one of a series, A Child Called "It". Calling this book a "page turner" doesn't give it justice. Easy to read, but difficult to comprehend how any mother could treat her child this way
A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer. An amazing book and an even more amazing person.
A Child Called "IT": Dave Pelzer this was an amazing book to read, so eye opening!

The Diary of a Young Girl is a book of the writings from the Dutch language diary kept by Anne Frank while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The family was apprehended in 1944 and Anne Frank ultimately died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. After the war, the diary was retrieved by Anne's father, Otto Frank, the only known survivor of the family.

“It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” ― Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his "Great Sadness," Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend.

“I think... if it is true that there are as many minds as there are heads, then there are as many kinds of love as there are hearts.” ― Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina, 1877
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy Tolstoy's epic is about so much more than the oft-discussed tragic romance at its core. It's an homage to irreverence and manual labor, an exploration of Russian society life, and a critique of aristocratic sloth.

" The Sandcastle Girls" by Chris Bohjalian---Set against the backdrop of the 1915 Armenian genocide in Turkey, this tale is told alternately by a Bostonian woman in Turkey to provide aid to the refugees and her granddaughter in the present day. Bohjalian's novels are true to human nature and rich in setting. One of my new favorite authors! --Nancy Ehas, Director
Not only do I think The Sandcastle Girls is Chris Bohjalian’s best book yet, it’s also one of the best books I’ve ever read. I’d go so far as to call it a masterpiece. It’s the only time I can ever remember finding myself reading every paragraph twice . . . it’s just that beautifully written and moving (and brought me to tears more times than I can count).
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian ~ was on my to read list. Very good. One of my favorite authors
THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS is a sweeping historical love story steeped in Chris Bohjalian's Armenian heritage. Due in July 2012 - sure to be another good one!
THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS, Chris Bohjalian's 15th book, is a spellbinding tale that travels between Aleppo, Syria, in 1915 and Bronxville, New York, in 2012 --- a sweeping historical love story steeped in the author’s Armenian heritage, a subject his legions of fans have been asking him to write about for years.
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian. Historical fiction. In exploring her family history, the protagonist learns about Armenian genocide during WWI. Despite the topic, an uplifting book about hope and survival.
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian - Gloria/October 2013 A beautifully written, gripping historical novel that uses the backdrop of the 1915 Armenian Genocide in Syria to tell of the true devastation that occurred during the First World War.
In his fifteenth book, The Sandcastle Girls, Chris Bohjalian brings us on a different kind of journey. This spellbinding tale travels between Aleppo, Syria, in 1915 and Bronxville, New York, in 2012--a sweeping historical love story steeped in the author's Armenian heritage, making it his most personal novel to date. When Elizabeth Endicott arrives in Syria, she has a diploma from Mount Holyoke College, a crash course in nursing, and only the most basic grasp of the Armenian language.
