Moon rises over Mt Eden in New Zealand's largest city of Auckland, May 6, 2012. The moon appears larger and brighter than normal on Sunday as its closest approach to Earth coincides with a full moon. On Sunday, the moon looks 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual. The scientific term for the phenomenon is perigee moon, but it is also known as a "super moon".

Did you see that full Moon Saturday night? Dubbed a supermoon, the latest fully illuminated moon appeared slightly larger than usual because it occurred unusually near the closest point in its orbit to Earth. Pictured above, the supermoon was captured Saturday night rising behind the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Of course, the angular extent of the moon in comparison to foreground objects can be adjusted just by changing the observer's distance to the foreground object.
