Ruth St. Denis, (1879-1968) American dancer and choreographer. Considered the grandmother of the Dances Of Universal Peace, was one of two women credited with founding Modern Dance in America, the other being Isadora Duncan. Their approaches to dance differed in that Duncan sought “the Self in the Universe” while St. Denis sought “the Universe in the Self.”

Duncan's choreography, comprised of pleasing poses and images, continued the 19th-century affinity for pictorial beauty. Unlike many other dancers, however, Duncan excelled in conveying the emotional impulses of music. She also effectively expressed her spirituality through movement. In her essay “The Dancer of the Future”, Duncan outlined her beliefs that dance should embrace gravity, not defy it, and that all movement begins in the solar plexus.
