A clever way keep track of the kids' levels. Colored dots. Laminate. Add Velcro strips.

For keeping track of Reading Level: Take running record of each student once a week. Each student has their own name tag with velcro on it. You move it according to what their reading level is as they progress.

Teaching vocabulary is important. We have space for furniture and equipment; we have space for books, backpacks, and writing utensils. If words are important, then finding places to organize and display words should take prominence in the structure of your classroom.
