It’s Not Just About Plants

Gothic Settee, Kramer Brothers Foundry Company, circa 1880-1900. Garden Furnishings Collection, Smithsonian Gardens.

This Renaissance revival settee is originally from Lutheran cemetery in Middleburg, NY. Around 1930-1935, it was difficult to find anyone willing to cut the grass around the cast iron furniture so they got rid of them all. Cemetery gate, Savannah, Georgia, ca. 1850? Cemetery gates often depicted motifs reflecting the afterlife. The weeping willow represents grief. Some sources have called this design with lambs the Psalm 23 motif, which starts with "The Lord is my shepherd." Compared to a similar gate, the top decorative family name plate is missing.
