DESERTIFICATION: the process which turns a productive into non- productive desert as a result of poor land-management. Causes: * Cultivation of lands on which there is a high risk of crop failure and a low profit. * Destruction of vegetation in arid regions, often for fuelwood. * Poor grazing management, overgrazing. * Incorrect irrigation which can prevent plant growth.
Originally published in 1513 as an instruction manual for the farmers of central Spain, this book is especially relevant to arid regions of the world, and much of its wisdom has been used in the Southwestern United States. Includes a chapter on vineyards. There is also a section on medicinal uses of grains, taken from ancient sources, and a chapter on planting by the moon. We list this mostly for its information on arid farming.
