MAY 8 New York novelist Thomas Pynchon born this day 1937. 'Everybody gets told to write about what they know. The trouble with many of us is that at the earlier stages of life we think we know everything- or to put it more usefully, we are often unaware of the scope and structure of our ignorance.'
George Lois's Kennedy cover is a very interesting picture because of they way its presented. you have JFK's face in a magazine which is pretty good by it's self, but then you have someone doing his make up as if it was an early version of photoshop. but over its a pretty good piece overall
1962 George Lois did this mock up cover for Esquire - he wanted to use a photo of the actual 100th GI who had lost his life in Vietnam but the State Department refused so he used a snap shot of himself from the Korean War. The war cry was "It will be over by Christmas". Since covers had to be prepared 2 months in advance editor Harold Hayes worried they would end up with Egg on their faces - killed the cover. 12 years later the war was over with 58,000 US servicemen dead or MIA.
