The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne: A classic piece of literature that every single person should read before they die; actually they should have read it before they graduated high school. Quite possibly my favorite novel of all time.
The Scarlet Letter. i personally don't like this book, just because i feel like it's written rather dryly.
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel HawthorneIn a way, this piece of literature was one of the first books to explore the idea of "slut-shaming," before that term was an official lexicon in high school hallways. In this woeful tale, Hawthorne goes on to touch upon themes of adultery, sin, and public humiliation.
The Scarlet Letter. The books I read junior year of high school are probably some of my all time favorite secular books.
The Scarlet Letter. I know people dread it but there is something to it. I can honestly say it's one of my favorites!
The Scarlet Letter -- great book, with amazing imagery, Hawthorne making damn sure you understand what symbolizes what, and kick ass quotes

Even as a child I wanted to know why only the woman was branded. Didn't help my case at all that I attended a predominantly male high school and was often the only female in my class. At least in English class there were two other females, but our questions went unanswered. Given that she was the child and he the married priest, why was she branded and not him? Tsk, tsk. tsk. I only hope my son asks the question when he reads it this year.
The Scarlet Letter My favorite book of all time!

The Scarlet Letter is a brilliant examination on the nature of sin. Each chapter explores a new nuance. Read it and Hawthorne's short story "Young Goodman Brown" and then remember that he writes all of this years before Freud.
Classic American writing - albeit a bit tedious.

Not that such extreme discipline should be enforced today, but it shows how far we've seemed to forget the importance of moral and Godly standards.
The Scarlet Letter is about Hester Prynne, a young female in a 17th century Puritan community. She has an illigitamate birth by ways of an adulterous event. Hester is forced to find inner strength as she is trapped by the beliefs of her society. I want to read this book because it is a classic and as a secondary teacher, I should know it. I can relate it to our society because births out of wedlock are common.
