Another pinner says: Nov., 2012. Middlesex (Oprah's Book Club) -- winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Not my typical reading fare, but I was hooked after 50 or so pages & completely agree that this book's acclaim is well-deserved. Intelligent, tender, insightful.
I usually steer clear of Oprah's Book Club picks but since this won a pulitzer I gave it a shot anyway. Definitely worth it!

This book is on my top ten list. I absolutely love it. Annie Proulx writes wonderfully. The syntax, diction, and vivid descriptions are marvelous, the plot is second to none, and the characters are beautiful. A MUST on your reading list... But don't watch the movie. It's terribly disappointing.
Annie Proulx became known as the author of Brokeback Mountain when her short story was made into a movie a few years back. Her novel 'The Shipping News' is even better. It's a completely different theme and a wonderful tale.

The Language of Flowers - Vanessa Diffenbaugh The story of a girl who grew up in the foster care system, and newly emancipated at 18, realizes the gift she has for choosing flowers for people based on their meanings and the chance meeting with a stranger that will change her life forever.
Good Reads: Spring Reading List The Language of Flowers- Vanessa Diffenbaugh Read in book club 2014. Liked the book quite a bit. Easy and nice read.
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh is the March selection for the Rossland Branch book club. Victoria Jones, 18 and now out of the foster care system, is unable to get close to other people. She realizes that she has a gift for helping others through flowers, but a mysterious stranger has her questioning what has been missing from her life.
The Language of Flowers: A Novel by Vanessa Diffenbaugh Book Club Discussion Guide from BookMovement --Book Clubs, Book Reviews, Discussion Questions, Book Lists
The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it's been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings....
HEPL staff review of The Language of FLowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. "The foster care system has been hard on Victoria Jones, and has left her with a number of reasons to mistrust people and build up walls to keep them at bay. Victoria has cycled through the foster care systems, living with various families and going in and out of group homes."
The Language of Flowers, by Vanessa Diffenbaugh (27 Aug 2012) -- Genre: Literary, Psychological, Saga, Fiction [Florists, San Francisco, foster care system]
The Language of Flowers: A Novel; high school and young adult. Discovering the symbolic meanings of flowers while languishing in the foster-care system, eighteen-year-old Victoria is hired by a florist when her talent for helping others is discovered, a situation that leads her to confront a painful secret from her past.

Had to buy this for book club. NOT a Stephen King fan....... It is Cinder Block Huge, so I hope I like it!!
11/22/63 by Stephen King is a 2011 novel about time travel, but rather than focusing on ancient history, it is set in the 1960s. An English school teacher is given the power to go back and change the course of history. What would have happened if the JFK murder never took place? Not a huge King fan, but this thriller rocks.
Stephen King writes great time travel fiction (inspired by "Time and Again") Awesome book...not your "normal" Stephen King book....
11/22/63 - A science fiction story about time travel and the assassination of JFK. King actually includes areas of DFW that are known to locals - by far my favorite book to date.
11/22/63 Stephen King's take on time travel and the JFK assassination. Really compelling. I'm not much of a King fan (nothing against him either - just not my cup of tea) but I REALLY enjoyed this and had a hard time putting it down.
I've long been a Stephen King fan but haven't read one of his in a very long time. This book reaffirms for me that he is simply THE master story teller. He is known for horror but this book is really historical fiction / time travel. All 800+ pages are truly gripping and take you places you never expect. I tend to be more of a fan of his older work, but he really nailed it with this one.
11/22/63...one of my favorite books, so far. Could not put it down. Even if you aren't a Stephen King fan...a great read!

“What an astonishing thing a book is... A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.” - Carl Sagan
"What an astonishing thing a book is..." - Quote from Carl Sagan | Book Quote - Books are Magic
What an astonishing thing a book is... but one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic. (Carl Sagan)
This is so true. Books ARE the fabric of time. Books ARE the words of our histories. Books ARE the statements, quotes, and literature of every great author who lived in every moment before us. Books ARE the very essence that describes the deepest emotion of the heart from the very soul of the one who wrote. Books ARE more than just paper with words on them, they are the very mind and thought of the one who is being written about. WE ARE BOOKS, BOOKS ARE US!!
Book Quote: “What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made...

When I first read this, I thought it said " cleaning" instead of "reading". This made me laugh because when I was younger and grounded for having a messy room, instead of cleaning, I would just sit atop piles of clothes and read books. Anti-authority by nature, at an early age.

Banned Book, High School, Jd Salinger, Reading List, Booksbooksbook, Favorite Books, Books Book
Since its publication in 1951, 'The Catcher in the Rye' has been a focal point for censorship. One of the most recent attempts to remove it from a school reading list was in 2009 at the Big Sky High School in Missoula, Montana.
Catcher in the Rye I reread this thinking I missed all the greatness and story line during high school. Sadly, I still didn't like it and still think the books cover is 100% better than the book itself.
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger JUN 2014 - Hyde Park Book Club Read a long time ago; on my to re-read list and was a book club selection (I didn't go) Holden narrates the story of a couple of days in his sixteen-year-old life, just after he's been expelled from prep school, in a slang that sounds edgy even today and keeps this novel on banned book lists.

Love this book - Molokai, by Alan Brennert, all about a little Hawaiian girl in a leper colony in Moloka'i in 1891.
