Designing Tomorrow: America’s World’s Fairs of the 1930s Architect Albert Kahn and designer Norman Bel Geddes collaborated on the General Motors Building for the New York World’s Fair in 1939. courtesy the National Building Museum.
Norman Bel Geddes' "Futurama" (1939) One of the most impressive attractions at the 1939 World's Fair in New York was General Motors 35,000-square-foot diorama, depicting America in 1960 as a place reshaped in wonderful ways by the automobile. "Speed is the cry of our era," "Futurama" designer Bel Geddes explained, and he envisioned highways with curved sides that allowed cars in the outer lanes to travel safely at 100 miles per hour.

Drawings and descriptions of buildings at the 1939-1940 NY World's Fair. It would have been fun to see the exhibits and ideas of the future- 2039. Back then the World's Fair was a place to see new innovations and ideas. During a time with war on the horizon, it would be a great escape to see a hopeful and better future.
Future trade fair
The 1939/40 New York World's Fair – "Fair of the Future," "The World of Tomorrow” – was a masterpiece of showmanship, the epitome of stagecraft. More than a collection of exhibits, it was a wellspring of innovation, sponsored by the most future-minded American corporations (when America’s industry reigned surpreme, and would rise even higher). "This Fair of Tomorrow is a promise for the future built with the tools of Today, upon the experience of Yesterday..."
