The African Methodist Episcopal Church on East Fifth Street, in Madison, IN included noted Underground Railroad participants George DeBaptiste, Elijah Anderson, Griffin Booth, Joseph O’Neal, and David Lott. The building is a modest, one story, Greek Revival design with elongated windows along the side walls and two double doors with transoms and flat stone lintels on the facade. A stone marker within the façade’s brick course reads “AME Church, Founded 1850.”

[The Rev. John] Todd filled his cellar with clothing, ammunition, muskets, sabers and 20 boxes of Sharps rifles. He stored one brass cannon in his haymow and another on wheels in his wagon shed.  “For me, it brings history to life to say it happened right here. John Brown must have stood right here. Maybe sat in this chair,” Janowski said. The Tabor [Iowa] Historical Society offers tours of this former residence. There are no set times. Call 712-629-3164 to make an appointment.
