Flight Officer Johnny Smythe, from Sierra Leone, enlisted in the RAF in 1939. He was one of four out of a class of 90, to complete the tough training to be a Navigator. On his 28th bomber mission, in November 1943, he was wounded, shot down, and captured by Germans who could not believe they were looking at a Black officer. In Stalag Luft One, Smythe worked on the escape committee, but couldn’t break out himself: "I don’t think a six-foot-five black man would’ve got very far in Pomerania."

October 1943

Starting in October 1943, Marianne Cohen, a member of the French Resistance, smuggled groups of children to Switzerland until she was arrested in May 1944, with a group of 28 children. The Jewish members of the underground planned to rescue her but she refused, lest her escape endanger the children. The children were rescued, but Marianne Cohn was kidnapped by members of the special services from Lyon on July 3, 1944, severely tortured and murdered in Ville la Grand, near Annemasse.

He also comforted people with his quiet resolve in confronting the enemies of America who perpetrated the attacks.
