Awesome Women Who Never Got Married: American novelist Louisa May Alcott’s poor upbringing drove her to eschew marriage in favor of earning her own living. She proclaimed in an 1856 journal entry, “I love luxury, but freedom and independence better.” And four years later, after Alcott visited her newlywed sister’s honeymoon cottage, she recorded in her journal, “Very sweet and pretty, but I’d rather be a free spinster and paddle my own canoe.”
Before Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women, she was a Civil War nurse! Her book, Hospital Sketches, was part of my research for my novel Wedded to War.
Louisa May Alcott--- (November 29, 1832 – March 6, 1888) was an American novelist best known as author of the novel Little Women and its sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. Raised by her transcendentalist parents, Abigail May and Amos Bronson Alcott in New England, she grew up among many of the well-known intellectuals of the day such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau.
