Though very different in form and tone, Stephen King’s “Doctor Sleep” was a welcome follow-up to “The Shining”. Worth reading if for no other reason to find out just what happened to those characters decades later. -Mike

BOOK REVIEW: "Doctor Sleep" by Stephen King. There’s nothing better than a fireside, a cup of tea and a good novel on a cold, midwinter evening. Choose your cuppa and our climate provides the snow but for an engrossing and hair-raising read you can’t do better than King’s latest, "Doctor Sleep." Worth Reading, Garth Hale, Graphics Novels, Ghosts Wranglers, Back Home, Ghostopoli, Evil Ruler, Frank Gallows, Doug Tennapel
GHOSTOPOLIS / Doug TenNapel ; My notes: A great introductory graphic novel for middle & high school students that's sure to have you reading all of TenNapel's other GNs. Summary: When he is accidentally transported to the spirit world by a washed-out ghost wrangler, Garth Hale discovers that the world's evil ruler wants his unique powers, and so he teams up with some unlikely allies to find a way home.
Imagine Garth Hale's surprise when he's accidentally zapped to the spirit world by Frank Gallows, a washed-out ghost wrangler. Suddenly Garth finds he has powers the ghosts don't have, and he's stuck in a world run by the evil ruler of Ghostopolis, who would use Garth's newfound abilities to rule the ghostly kingdom. When Garth meets Cecil, his grandfather's ghost, the two search for a way to get Garth back home, and nearly lose hope until Frank Gallows shows up to fix his mistake.

Dear Life, You Suck by Scott Blagden - Irreverent, foul-mouthed, seventeen-year-old Cricket Cherpin, living under the watchful eye of Mother Mary at a Catholic boys' home in Maine, has such bleak prospects he is considering suicide when Wynona Bidaban steps into his world.
Dear Life, You Suck by Scott Blagden. As you've probably guessed by now, I truly appreciate realistic YA. Do not sugar coat it but don't try to convince me that they're all bad either. It took me a while to warm up to Cricket, the main character, but when I did this story took off. Honest and amazing. #reading #books #Blagden #teens

Death of Yesterday (Hamish Macbeth Mysteries): M. C. Beaton. Always Winners, the Hamish Macbeth series is for those who love a clever mystery series set in Scotland. Scottish dialect makes these books fun as well as the engaging Hamish and quirky villagers. The plotting is always decent. Formulaic? Yes. A pretty good formula, though. This one lives up to Beaton's standards.

Drawing on unprecedented access to Cronkite's private papers as well as interviews with his family and friends, Douglas Brinkley now brings this American icon into focus as never before.
