Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in many cultures. Families gather on the holiday to pray for and remember those who have died. The celebration takes place on November 1–2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Scholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl.
