Henry Roman Nose and wife - Southern Cheyenne - no date

War Chief Roman Nose made his name against the whites, in defense of the territory around the Republican and the Arickaree rivers. He was killed in 1868 in the battle of Beecher's Island. Roman Nose was shot just above the hip and the bullet lodged in his spine. He died later the same night. The young warriors saw the death of Roman Nose as a great light going out in the night sky.
