Bucket List. To see this!! Doug Perrine captured these stunning photographs in the Maldives. The particular location (Vaadhoo Island) has a concentrated population of bioluminescent phytoplankton. Bioluminescence is a natural chemical reaction which occurs when a micro-organism in the water reacts with oxygen. When washed ashore by the tides, the phytoplankton’s chemical energy is turned into light energy, illuminating the waves.

Bioluminescent Bay This uniquie bay in Puerto Rico contains single celled bioluminescent organisms which emit a flash of blue light when agitated at night. The waves hitting the shore, a shell tossed into the water, kayaking or just taking a swim, will cause this beautiful water to glow a neon blue. It is a gorgeous natural phenomena and occurs in three areas in Puerto Rico.

WOW!!!! Sea of Stars on Vaadhoo Island in the Maldives: What may appear as a mirror image of the stars above, the bioluminescence in the water is actually due to marine microbes called phytoplankton. The effect it has on the beach shore is absolutely breathtaking. | 27 Surreal Places To Visit Before You Die

"Everyone who terrifies you is sixty-five percent water. And everyone you love is made of stardust, and I know sometimes you cannot even breathe deeply, and the night sky is no home, and you have cried yourself to sleep enough times that you are down to your last two percent, but nothing is infinite, not even loss. You are made of the sea and the stars, and one day you are going to find yourself again.” - Finn Butler

thanks to Lost at E Minor for this "Imagine a spot of night swimming at your local beach, only to have the shoreline and waves glow an ethereal blue at any sign of agitation. The images here are from Vaadhoo Island in the Maldives, a place where a concentrated population exists, much to the delight of photographers who snapped these pictures.
