Dachshund: short-legged, long-bodied dog belonging to the hound family. Standard size dachshunds were bred to scent, chase & flush out badgers & other burrow dwelling animals while the miniature was developed to hunt smaller prey such as rabbits. In the US West they have also been used to hunt prairie dogs. Today they are bred for conformation shows & as family pets. Some participate in earthdog trials. According to AKC dachshund continues to remain one of the top 10 dog breeds in the US.
