You can grow garlic, sweet potatoes, sage, onions, parsley, mint and more. Here's an easy way to save money, help the environment and grow your vegetables. You don't need a green thumb and it take no time. Here's how I started my windowsill garden. What you'll need. 1 Small clear container 1 garlic bud or buds of green onions 1/2 cup of water (or less) source Use a clear container it helps you see when the water needs to be changed and you can watch the roots grow. Do not submerge the cloves or green onions in water they will become cloudy, smelly and will begin to rot. Add just enough water to cover the bottom of the cup and touches just the bottom of the cloves. source Your budding garlic cloves and green onions will start to sprout in just a few days. It's a cool little hobby and a great way to save money on vegetables. The same applies to herbs like sage, basil and mint. Just snip at the stem of the given plant and place it in a clear container of water. In a few days you will begin to seem roots. In a month, you can plant in a pot of soil or just contunie to water. source No more spoiled green onions or brown herb leaves. Fresh ingredients from your window sill. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.
The next time you pick up green onions at the grocery store, don’t discard the white ends after you’ve used up all the greens. Instead, stick the white root end into a glass with an inch or two of water then place in a sunny window. Make sure to trim most of the green end off before you place it in the water...

Nifty Food & Plants To Grow Indoors If you don’t have any garden space or you live in a climate with a short growing season, you can still exercise your green thumb with these indoor plant ideas…a few will even produce fresh produce too! You’ll find tips for growing assorted herbs, a couple vegetables and a few neat-o plants to try your hand at. You can grow them inside year round but many will thrive outdoors during the summer months (if you have the space) but move them indoors once it gets a little chilly and before the first frost (imagine having garden fresh tomatoes over the winter!). Never Pay For Onions Again Enjoy Garden Fresh Onions Year Round With Tip: Here’s a great tip from MyByrdHouse: Onion Recycling Tutorial: I learned this tip a couple of years ago and have tried it and found that it works and is quite marvelous. I love to use fresh green onions but am always out or there is a slimy little bag of them in the bottom of the fridge. Here is my marvelous tip for growing them yourself and recycling a bit. The trick is to take the cut end (root side) and plant it in a pot, water well, give it some time and voila! You have fresh (and free!) onions at your disposal. This will work for a variety of different onions and the beauty of this tip is that as you use the onions, you replant the cut root ends to grow more. You can use a tub just for onions and haul it indoors during winter months (will need lots of sun) or if it’s just green onions you’re interested in growing, a large flower pot will do. Onion recycling Tutorial I learned this tip a couple of years ago and have tried it and found that it works and is quite marvelous. I love to use fresh green onions but am always out or there is a slimy little bag of them in the bottom of the fridge. Here is my marvelous tip for growing them yourself and recycling a bit. Onion Recycling 1. Take the onion you are using for cooking, green, red, yellow, or white, it doesn't matter. Cut off the root end. You are going to do that anyway. For a bulb onion like a red, white or yellow, I kinda core the onion and cut out a little cone there at the root end. This onion came from my garden so the roots are huge but the ones from the store work the same. 2. Take that root bit you cut off and plant it in dirt and water it well. You can directly plant this in the garden. I plant mine in a tub in my yard for easy onion access year round. You can even plant them in a flower pot in a sunny window. There you have it. In a few weeks you will have tons of green onions for the picking. Actually I just take my knife out there and cut them off at the ground and they grow me another onion quickly. If you just need the green parts for your recipe, just snip off a few of the green things and chop them up. The onion plant will send up more and that will actually stop the plant from going to seed which makes the onion tough.

Plant seeds using egg shells
Here's a fantastic, easy gardening idea - how to use eggshells to plant seeds! There are numerous benefits to this idea: 1) You don't have to uproot the seeds when it comes to time to plant them out - simply crack the shells and the roots will grow through! This saves you from potentially damaging the young seedlings - and the shells will break down. 2) The eggshells are biodegradable, so there is no waste.

Top 10 Tomatoes for Container Gardening Success
By Rhonda Cossey To start a container tomato growing campaign there are a few tricks to consider before you start. You must first choose the type of tomato you want to grow. There are as many styles and varieties as there are people living in the state of New York. But with all the choices available, you must decide how the tomatoes will be used and pick the best one for your patio or deck gardening endeavors. Choosing the right plant may seem a daunting task, but if you ask for help from your garden center you will usually be steered in the right direction. You will also need an appropriate container. The perfect pot is a self waterer that will ensure that the plant's roots do not become waterlogged and rot before you see the fruits of the harvest, but will keep water close at hand for the plant to absorb the water through the soil. These can be purchased anywhere garden supplies are sold, but you can actually use whatever large container you may already have - so long as it has adequate drainage. If you have leftover plastic buckets from house painting, punch a few holes in the bottom and put some gravels or small rocks in there to keep the dirt from stopping up the holes, put in fresh dirt (potting soil is lighter) and your plant, set in the sun, and you are ready to wait! Another thing to consider is that tomatoes need sunlight. If you do not have direct sun the plants will be a little leggy (tall and spindly), but will still produce tomatoes for your salad. Tomatoes love heat more than light, so make sure you have them in a spot that they will get a lot of heat. They are very resilient, but to have great success you must keep them warm. Keeping the unnecessary parts of the plant from flourishing will increase your yield. Pull out the suckers (the leaves that grow between the stalk and the limb) since they will not produce anything - but will direct energy away from the fruit. Most tomatoes need to have a stake or trellis to grow on, but you can keep a tomato plant pruned back a bit so that it doesn't overtake the entire patio. Just make sure you do not cut off any part of the plant that has flowers or tomatoes on it! Choose your plants, tools, and area wisely and you will have all the tomatoes you can eat. Growing tomatoes on a patio or deck is fun and easy, not to mention healthy and inexpensive! Try it this year, and you will surely be hooked.Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Rhonda_Cossey

Growing Cilantro. If you let them go to seed they will reseed themselves and during the next dry season they will come up as volunteers. I love cilantro!
The standard directions are to sow cilantro about 1 cm deep, but there is no need to get scientific about it. Just cover the seeds and keep them moist. You want about 5 cm between plants if you grow cilantro for the leaf. They need more space if you grow them for seed, but you can always eat the extre plants and just leave a few to go to seed. Cilantro seeds take about two to three weeks to germinate.
