Repeated scientific debunking hasn’t dented brainstorming’s popularity.

"groupthink" - great article in the new yorker about collaboration & creativity - "The most creative spaces are those which hurl us together. It is the human friction that makes the sparks"
Group Creativity: 1/brainstorming must encourage criticizm of each ones ideas, 2/people must have some good common background 3/the office design must make people bumping into each others
Groupthink - - architecture encouraging cross-displinary collaboration; steve jobs, bell laboratories, not working in a vacuum - see also Amazon review of The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation by Jon Gertner
Groupthink. The brainstorming myth. Repeated scientific debunking hasn’t dented brainstorming’s popularity. The New Yorker.
“Decades of research have consistently shown that brainstorming groups think of far fewer ideas than the same number of people who work alone and later pool their ideas.” I found the recommendations from this worthwhile and passed on to collaborators. The discussion of Building 20 @MIT is an added bonus.
Brainstorming Doesn't Really Work : The New Yorker, but it does, just not in the way that we do it. People need to be able to disagree, it isn't acceptance of every idea...
Some controversial thoughts in this piece but something I have been looking at for how we run sessions - go to page 3 final paragraph and read from there about Building 20 at MIT which has been celebrated as a creative hothouse. What drove the creativity was that teams from different disciplines mixed, there was a freedom to use the space as they wished and a tendency for unusual meetings and cross-genre collaborations which will drive creativity in a digital space as well.

Positive Thinking Doesn't Work; Here's What Does/NY Magazine
We were told for years, by Oprah and others, that positive thinking was the key to achieving our goals. Now mounting evidence suggests exactly the opposite: that spending a lot of time thinking about your hopes and dreams may make you less likely to put in the work required to actually achieve those dreams. So if positivity is out, what should goal-oriented people replace it with? This week on the "Psychology Podcast" — a newish venture from cognitive psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman — New York University psychologist Gabriele Oettingen talked about a four-step plan she's come up with from her years of research. (Oettingen is the author of the new book Researching Positive Thinking: Inside the New Science of Motivation, which Science of Us ran an excerpt of in October.) Oettingen explained the plan to Kaufman; it's a delightful little acronym that spells WOOP.
