Banksy Street Art “Art comes alive in the arguments you have about it.” You have probably heard of Banksy but if you haven’t you should still definitely read this article! [[MORE]] So goes the quote from the illusive Bristolian known to the public simply as ‘Banksy’. Banksy’s career began in the 1990s, as a simple street artist spray-painting images around Bristol. A modest start, and one that is perhaps more likely to land one behind bars than bring them international fame. So what distinguishes Banksy’s art from that of your average vandal? It’s simple: Banksy uses street art as a highly thought-provoking commentary on society, the government, and the pertinent and controversial issues that define the modern world that we live in. One of the works that first brought Banksy into the spotlight was his 2005 image of two Palestinian children under a painted hole in the West Bank Barrier through which a luxurious beach serves as a startling contrast to the bleak reality of the Palestinian West Bank. A perfect illustration of the risqué and controversial nature of his work, this picture became the subject of much debate for its presentation of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Another example of the mystery-man’s work, one that we, the children of the social media age, can all relate to, is a portrait of a wailing child under the classic orange banner us Instagram users are all too familiar with, proclaiming 0 new likes, comments and followers. Banksy’s most recent work appeared in his native Bristol on Sunday, depicting a couple’s embrace, both lovers looking at their mobile phones over the other’s shoulder. As if these spectacular criticisms of the world we live in weren’t enough to entice the vast majority of art-lovers, we have the added bonus of the thrilling mystery of who the man behind the art really is. Despite having enjoyed enormous success, launched numerous exhibitions, published books and even created a documentary, all communications on Banksy’s behalf are made through an agent. There has been some speculation on Banksy’s identity, and there is evidence to suggest that a certain Robin Gunningham may be responsible for the scandalous masterpieces. However, investigation has been limited and neither Gunningham nor Banksy’s agent has confirmed or denied the rumour. Perhaps it is best that his identity remains secret: after all, isn’t the mystery half the charm? Besides, if Banksy’s identity were to be revealed, he may face legal repercussions despite his international acclaim and the monetary and aesthetic value of his pieces as cultural landmarks. Whether we know who he is or not, we impatiently await Banksy’s next masterpiece. If you would like to view more of Banksy’s work and learn more about the man behind it, check out this infographic.
