Modern Dance Pioneers: Martha Graham’s “Celebration” 1937

  • Spelman Dance

Graham focused on issues that women during that time weren't expected to convey. Graham expressed emotions dealing with depression, anger, and sad feelings. The expression of these emotions weren't usually allowed on stage through dance. This is because of the past with classical and contemporary ballet and their happy fairy tale like stories. Her movement language was based upon the expressive capacity of the human body.

Graham's influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on modern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. She danced and choreographed for over seventy years, and was the first dancer ever to perform at the White House, travel abroad as a cultural ambassador, and receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
