Today we made a "Gimme 5" summary togetherI had given them handouts similar to the chart paper pictured, and they recorded the details on the hand while I was reading. When I was done the chapter, groups created a Gimme 5 summary on chart paper.

Somebody Wanted But So Then method of summarizing. I love this board. Fill it in as a whole group then just tear off Post Its when you read a new text.

Love this idea :) -- "The incredible shrinking notes" Students start out writing a summary of their reading on the large index card. They are then given a medium sized card and have to take the info from the large card and condense it. By the time students get to the small index card they're getting to the main point/idea of the reading selection.
