"We're not going to make it to the van before dark unless we turn around now," Ben said. "Okay," I said, "Erik--" my breath caught in my throat as I spotted her. She was sitting on an extremely sketchy-looking rock that extended out over the gorge. She looked over the edge. Her hand knocked two pebbles down, down, down. My breathing started coming too fast and I was sweating. If she slipped even as little as a millimeter, she would fall off. Who knows how long it would take to find her body.

This pain, this dying, this is just normal. This is how life is. In fact, I realize, there never was an earthquake. Life is just this way, broken, and I am crazy for dreaming of something else. — Miranda July
