A pioneer of modern furniture design, Florence Schust was born in 1917 in Saginaw, Michigan. Florence studied at the Kingswood School on the campus of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and in the 1930s, She became a protégée of Eero Saarinen while studying architecture at Cranbrook, the Architectural Association in London and the Armour Institute.
Florence Knoll Bassett (born May 24, 1917) is an American architect and furniture designer who studied under Mies van der Rohe and Eliel Saarinen. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan as Florence Schust and is known in familiar circles simply as "Shu". She graduated from the Kingswood School before studying at the Cranbrook Academy of Art (both institutions are located on the same campus in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan). Knoll also received a bachelor's degree in architecture from Armour Institute

While a student on the campus of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Florence Knoll Bassett became a protegée of Eero Saarinen. She worked briefly for Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Wallace K. Harrison. In 1946, she married Hans Knoll, after which they formed Knoll Associates. As a pioneer of the Knoll Planning Unit, she revolutionized interior space planning with her belief in "total design" - embracing all aspects of design principles which were radical departures from the standard practice in the 1950s, but were quickly adopted and remain widely used today. For her extraordinary contributions to architecture and design, Florence Knoll was accorded the National Endowment for the Arts' prestigious 2002 National Medal of Arts.

Michael Thonet (1796 - 1871) was a German-Austrian cabinet maker. He is the creator of the No. 14, or better known as Konsumstuhl Nr. 14. The Bentwood chair is considered the "chair of chairs". Over 50 million were produced before the Second World War. The chair won the gold medal 1867 Paris World's Fair.

Michael Thonet, Boppard, Germany(1796-1871. Michael Thonet established a cabinet-making workshop in Boppard in 1819. Around 1830 Michael Thonet began to experiment with bending battens that had been cut and laminated, thus inventing the Boppard laminated wood chair. In 1842, together with his five sons, he founded a successful company-Gebrüder Thonet-in Vienna. Within a short amount of time it became globally successful and expanded rapidly.
