Donald Bogle is a film historian and author of six books concerning African Americans in film and television. He is an instructor at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated from historically black Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1966. His first book, "Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies and Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in Films, was published in 1973.

Jiu Jin Shan (Old Gold Mountain) by Hung Liu, 1994, from her show "Offerings" at Mills College  Over two hundred thousand fortune cookies create a symbolic gold mountain that engulfs a crossroads of railroad tracks running beneath. The junction is both a crossroad and a terminus, a visual metaphor of the cultural intersection of East and West as well as the end of dreams of many Chinese immigrants who perished during the building of the Sierra Nevada section of the transcontinental railroad.
