DIY Butterfly Cafe: 1/2 cup of soft ripe fruit (we used kiwi, but bananas, pears or apples would work too); 1/4 cup brown sugar; 1/4 cup maple syrup; 4 tablespoons of cola...Stir ingredients together. Pour into a small plate. Place it onto a larger plate. Fill the larger plate with water. This will keep crawling bugs out like a moat. Set the mixture in the sun for about a day. It will start to ferment and give off a strong sweet, fruity Oder that will attract the butterflies.
Butterfly weed is high in nectar and attracts butterflies and pollinating bees. You'll probably even get some swallowtail caterpillars snacking on the leaves, since Asclepias is in the milkweed family, a host plant for the swallowtail butterfly. But Asclepias tuberosa is much better behaved than common milkweed. Butterfly weed is one of the last plants to emerge in the spring, so be patient. It has a long tap root and doesn't like to be moved, once it's established. But you get a hand full of volunteers each year, to keep your garden fresh or to give to friends.
