Photos: Photos: The Hats of Queen Elizabeth’s Monarchy, in Honor of Her Diamond Jubilee | Vanity Fair

  • Deena Millett

The Queen sticks out like a green thumb in a sea of her red Yeomen of the Guard, who keep the peace at Buckingham Palace. While they’re in the official regimental feathers, ruffs, and gossamer Tudor hats (brims are a strict 2.75 inches!) of the unit, the Queen wears a double-breasted green coat and matching wide-brimmed, ribbon-trimmed hat in the front row.

The Hats of Queen Elizabeth’s Monarchy: With her fox-fur headband, a tweed coat, and a softly lopped scarf held in place with a brooch, the Queen’s cushier, more pastel elder style is a sharp contrast to her primary-color turbans of the 1970s. Here, she clutches a yellow rose while celebrating Christmas at Sandringham, her other country estate, in 2010.

Prinzessin Elizabeth von England, heute Königin Elisabeth II. by Miss Mertens, via Flickr

Queen Elizabeth II - I think there will always be something comforting about QEII. I'm not a monarchist, just an aussie girl. So maybe its because she has been there on the back of all our coins, maybe because her picture used to hang on the wall at school and at girl guides. She's always just been there... Weird, but true.

Queen Elizabeth. So beautiful. I love this picture in her youth. Ahhh, we were all young once.

Queen Elizabeth II. What an insightful picture. Love it.

Princess Margaret - After seeing `Spartacus`, Margaret asked her sister to invite the film`s star, Kirk Douglas, to come to England just so Margaret could meeet him. He came and danced with her. She would say later it was the biggest thrill of her life. No mention about how it was for him.

Queen Elizabeth II looked incredibly lovely during this visit to the U.S. in 1976, decked out in femme #florals and dainty details, like a chain of pearls and structured handbag. Of course, she topped it all off with a charming hat #refinery29

Queen Elizabeth and two of her children, Princess Anne and Prince Charles. Princess Anne. The forgotten child? Kidnapping attempt in the 70's. We could play with this in dialogue? Relational ideal for a time period's heroine? Meh. Maybe.
