The Place de la Concorde was built in 1750 with a grand statue of Louis XV in the center. During the French Revolution, the statue was dismantled and a guillotine set up: Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, Robespierre, and Danton all lost their heads here. Concorde is a focal point for major landmarks: the Arc de Triomphe, the Madeleine church, the National Assembly, and the Tuileries Gardens and Louvre. At the center of the square is a gift from Egypt - a 75 ft obelisk from the temple of Luxor.
